Minds at Work #37

July 1, 2017

This holiday weekend feels different from the usual Fourth of July. Rather than focusing on fireworks and barbecues, many of us are faced with the challenging question of how best to stand up and create positive changes in the midst of this downward spiral.

It has been yet another eventful week full of embarrassing news stories, including Trump’s misogynistic tweets to Mika Brzezinski and the fake Time Magazine covers at his golf courses. We need to look past these headlines to focus on more pressing issues, including the Senate Healthcare billrevised travel ban and the war in Syria.

ACTION:

Stop the Senate Healthcare Bill

The vote is postponed until afte the July 4th recess. NOW is the time to call your senators, call other senators and share stories about how the GOP healthcare bill will impact you or your friends and family. We all know someone who will be very negatively impacted by these changes.

Indivisible has many tools right now on their Everything You Need to Stop Trumpcare resource page. Here are some links:

These are the Senators who should receive extra pressure – Senators in very purple states, those who have many citizens who use the ACA, or those who are up for reelection: Susan Collins (ME), Lisa Murkowski (AK), Dean Heller (NV), Shelley Moore Capito (WV), Bill Cassidy (LA), Rob Portman (OH), Tom Cotton (AR), Cory Gardner (CO), Jeff Flake (AZ), Pat Toomey (PA) and Dan Sullivan (AK).  Please forward to your friends in these states and share on Facebook!

If you need more inspiration to convince you that grassroots efforts ARE working and it is YOUR responsibility to be part of the solution, watch this video of how our Senators are fighting against Trumpcare.

SWING LEFT:

Many of the ongoing grassroots efforts are aimed at flipping seats, one local election at a time, as we gear up for the 2018 elections. Last week, we highlighted Roger Dean Huffstetler who’s running for Congress in Virginia’s 5th District.  If you have candidates in swing districts that you’d like us to highlight, please email us and we’ll get the word out!

Other organizations working on this effort are Code Blue and Flippable. Join them and see what you can do to help!

NONPROFITS:

International Rescue Committee

Continue to support IRC, and follow their website as a resource for how the Trump administration’s arbitrary and evolving travel bans are creating chaos for refugees seeking resettlement in the US.

Common Sense Media

The 2016 election brought gender stereotypes and gender inequality to the surface. It has been disturbing to witness, but many of us now see our country with more clarity and better understand how gender stereotypes – and the way our society enables and perpetuates them – negatively impact all of us. Common Sense Media has been investing efforts into this and just published an extensive gender report on stereotypes in media and how to challenge them. Spread the word and share this valuable resource.

Keep giving what you can, and find the organizations that matter most to you. Please tell us about organizations that you see doing great work or philanthropic events that are open to the public. We are always happy to share.
